A Place to Bury Strangers overdondert Effenaar
Vorige keer in de Effenaar werden door twee deugnieten de gitaren van A Place to Bury Strangers na de show van het podium ontvreemd. Nietsvermoedend passeerden ze de security alsof ze roadie waren. De volgende dag werden de gitaren netjes teruggebracht en dat zal wellicht de reden zijn dat A Place to Bury Strangers toch in de Effenaar is teruggekeerd.

De avond wordt geopend door Those Foreign Kids. Een Nederlands iel rammelgezelschap. Het duo mixt garage rock met Sonic Youth noise&rock maar blijft in de ‘aanmoddder’ mode hangen. Qua vocalen gaat het van vals naar een hoog stemmetje. De drums zijn houterig, waardoor je er na een kwartier wel genoeg van hebt. Soms ragt het tweetal op de punkleest door, maar het materiaal blijft niet hangen als geheel. Het blijft allemaal te dunnetjes en zonder overtuiging. Next please.
Rape blossoms dan. Deze Belgische band zet aan met een portie jaren tachtig sfeer en de zanger pakt gelijk de aandacht met zijn etherische stem en dwingende podium presentatie. Tussen de nummers is hij echter verrassend timide, maar dit past uitstekend bij de ingetogen en opbouwende mix van Post-Punk en New Wave. Naast dat de band put uit de jaren tachtig klinken ze ook modern en urgent. Halverwege eist een wazige synthesizerpartij de aandacht op om spacy vibes toe te voegen. De Effenaar lijkt rijp voor een spacy trip, maar helaas duurt deze fijne passage van Rape Blossoms net te kort aangezien na een half uur de zanger het laatste nummer aankondigt. Volgende keer graag meer.
Na een reeks mindere shows in Nederland overtuigt A Place to Bury Strangers vanavond direct. Ze hebben de beste nummers van de platen bij elkaar geraapt en in een nieuw geluid gegoten. Het is minder scherp en industrieël, maar doffer en warmer met de zang wat naar de achtergrond verhuisd. Dat klinkt op papier wellicht bijzonder kut, maar live werkt het fantastisch en het drietal overdondert nog steeds. Er is meer balans op het podium, doordat bass en drums naar de voorgrond zijn verschoven. Voorheen was de focus vooral op gitarist/zanger Oliver Ackermann.
Waar ze eerder afsloten met “I Lived My Life To Stand In The Shadow Of Your Heart” zetten ze dit nummer nu in het midden neer. Dat betekent dat we na twintig minuten al een dikke laag van gitaarpedaal geweld krijgen. Heerlijk en typerend voor de band uit New York. Daarna volgt de verrassing als een rijdende opstelling met effectenpedalen midden in de zaal wordt gezet en los daarvan knipperende laserlichten.
De elektronische drums zorgen samen met de noisy klanken voor een intermezzo waar het publiek vol met hun bakkes op staat. Na twee nummers kruipt de band op het podium om wederom sonisch orgasmes voor te bereiden en die uiteindelijk in te lossen. Dat komt er in het laatste nummer en als een donderslag is de show afgelopen. A Place To Bury Strangers kwam, zag en overwon.
