The Presidents of the USA maakte in 1995 indruk middels het klassieke debuutalbum dat mede dankzij de superhits ‘Lump’ en ‘Peaches’ wereldwijd een kleine vijf miljoen keer over de toonbank ging. De vier langspelers die daarop volgde waren minder succesvol, maar het drietal tourt inmiddels weer vrolijk de wereld rond. Zonder nieuw werk overigens. Het laatste wapenfeit uit de studio dateert alweer uit 2008.
De insteek voor vanavond in Eindhoven staat dan ook in het teken van dat eerder genoemde debuut, welke in zijn geheel integraal zal worden opgevoerd. Nadat de heren van Straight Lines, een nog onbekend gezelschap uit Wales, de Effenaar verdienstelijk heeft opgewarmd met alternatieve catchy klinkende rocksongs trapt het drietal, ookwel PUSA genaamd, af met 5 minder bekende songs.
Daarna is het de beurt aan het debuut, waarbij ook meteen duidelijk is dat het publiek vooral hiervoor is gekomen. De nummers blijken tijdloos, de humor is aanstekelijk en zowel band als publiek vermaken zich prima. Natuurlijk gaat vooral bij de hits ‘Lump’, ‘Peaches’ en ‘Kitty’ het dak eraf met een springende meute voor het podium en een incidentele crowdsurfer. Ook de MC5 cover ‘Kick out the Jams’ en ‘Dune Buggy’ doen het goed in de redelijk gevulde grote zaal van de Effenaar.
Eerlijk gezegd heeft het muzikaal allemaal niet zo gek veel om het lijf en diepgang is nauwelijks tot niet te bekennen, maar het is oh zo doeltreffend. De heren hebben zelf ook duidelijk niet de pretentie dat ze iets anders doen dan het bieden van simpel entertainment. En dat gaat ze uitstekend af. Het enige puntje van kritiek zit dan ook in de opbouw van de set. Het debuut, inclusief alle hits, komt vroeg op de avond voorbij, waardoor er van een logische opbouw naar een climax geen sprake meer is. De aanstekelijkheid en het plezier houdt het optreden echter tot het slotakkoord overeind.
