Queens of the Stone Age @ Effenaar, 14-05-2011
In 1998 speelde Queens of the Stone Age al eens in de Effenaar ter promotie van het destijds uitgebrachte debuut album. Nu 13 jaar en 5 albums later doen ze dit nog eens dunnetjes over in het kader van de re-release van dit legendarisch album. Speciaal voor een aantal shows in de wat kleinere zalen, wordt de gehele plaat van voor tot achter integraal ten gehore gebracht.
Alvorens we QotSA te zien krijgen mogen The Dough Rollers de boel opwarmen. Deze authentieke formatie schijnt op verzoek van de hoofdact met ze mee te reizen. Een even verrassende als opmerkelijke keuze. Klassieke retro country, blues en Rock and Roll valt ons ten deel, welke overigens erg spontaan en flink uptempo wordt gebracht. Op het podium werkt men zich flink in het zweet en de band krijgt meer dan een tevredenheids applaus. Hiermee toont het Effenaar publiek vanavond zeker open te staan voor een totaal ander muziek genre.
Maar iedereen is uiteraard voor Queens of the Stone Age gekomen. Dat blijkt als de zaallichten doven en voordat er ook maar één noot is gespeeld een luid gejuich, gejoel en applaus de band ten deel valt. Als de eerste tonen van ‘Regular John’ weerklinken, dan is meteen duidelijk dat we van start gaan met de eerder genoemde debuut plaat. Alle songs van de plaat worden in een rete-strakke uitvoering neergezet en vooral ‘Avon’ en ‘Mexico’ klinken hard en gemeen. De polka van ‘Hispanic Impressions’ zorgt voor een springende menigte voor het podium. Nadat de laatste tonen van ‘you can’t quit me baby’ wegsterven, verdwijnt de band van het podium en maakt de Effenaar zich op voor flink wat toegiften. Het decor is veranderd bij de tweede opkomst, waardoor QotSA staat te spelen tussen allemaal lichtstaven.
De band zoekt weinig de interactie met het publiek en lijkt op routine te draaien. Het valt hierbij op, dat naarmate het optreden vordert, er maar weinig vermaak op het podium waarneembaar is. Josh Homme kijkt nors en drinkt tussen de nummers door vooral uit zijn Wodka fles. Joey Castillo timmert als een bezetene op zijn drumstel en de rest doet vooral zijn ding. Op zich is het niet erg als een act zich op de muziek concentreert, maar een beetje spontaniteit had dit optreden goed gedaan.
In tegenstelling tot waar velen op hoopten, beperkt het tweede deel van de show zich tot slechts 5 songs. Onder andere ‘Sick Sick Sick’, ‘3’s and 7’s’ en ‘Little Sister’ komen nog wel voorbij. Schijnbaar heeft de band geen zin meer om ‘Go with the Flow, ‘No one knows’ of ‘Do it Again’, om er maar eens een paar te noemen, te spelen. Heeft dit dan toch met de gemoedstoestand van de dag te maken? Na nog geen anderhalf uur is de koek op en komt er toch een enigszins abrupt einde aan een show die kort en goed was, maar nergens de boeken in zal gaan als legendarisch. Gemiste kans.
